Wanna Help Pick Tile for My Bathroom?

September 7th, 2011 at 04:42 am

We are tiling our tub/shower surround in me and DH's bathroom. DH had to tear into the wall (and tear out the old tile) to reposition the bathroom window. The previous owners replaced the window, but installed it incorrectly AND five inches lower than the other bathroom window! The windows are side by side and face the street. It was so shoddy looking. The window looks GREAT now. Normal.

Anyway, I have a very loose idea about what I want. And that's the problem; too many choices! Over the next several months to year we will remodel this bathroom bit by bit. No way to afford everything at once. But, I pretty much need to decide on what I want now because each item ties into the other. I don't want to pick something that will look outdated in several years if we decide to sell. Or pick something that looks cheap.

My goal for the whole bathroom:
something that appeals to most people
high quality look for low cost
neutral color for the 'permanent' stuff

I am leaning toward the browns/beiges. I want to go pretty light because the bathroom is small. 5' X 7'. White or Grey is not out of the running yet either.

Some examples I'm considering:

(A) Subway, glossy white tile with glass accents.

(is glossy tile cheap looking?)

(B) Keeping tile and accent pieces in the same color and in a usual arrangement.

(Too much of the same color?)

(C) Stone looking ceramic tile with mixed mosaic accent tile.

(Too "fad"ish?)

I've spent ALOT of time looking at tile the past several days. I think I'm going cross-eyed!

I am no pro at picking these things, but I would lean towards option B... Good luck with your decision!!

I love B. In fact, the tile I picked for my house is very similar to option B.

I vote option B also. Is that Travertine? Looks similar to my master bath tile.

B is likely your best choice, but I do like the glossy subway tile look. I might keep the accents out though...since those can give it a dated look over time and are hard to change out.

I also like B. But you could maybe pick different colors of accents (maybe a shade darker) if you wanted a bit more pop.

    A. The glossy I am not a fan of, I also think it would make cleaning more difficult. I have a shiny surround and to get it shiny clean for listing I had to windex the walls daily so it was show ready. But I also think there are too many colors (4) in the accent design. In design it seems like things should be done in groups of three, so I would have done a 3 accent color border.

    C. I like the main tile...The accents would not be bad if it was limited to one or two rows. That many rows makes my eyes hurt. (****Overall this would be my Favorite IF it was limited to one or two accent rows****)

I personally like C. (Looks like the tile in my house)? I don't care much for the accents though.

A is pretty and all, but our house came with white tile, and I HATE it. Well, I hate white grout. I find it impossible to keep clean. White was just the cheap/free option.

I like B the best, but frankly, pick what you like. If you second guess (will the next owner like it, will the style hold up?) you risk picking something that you don't like and nobody else likes either. A miss all around.

I'd also look at the tile choices in different lights - sunlight if your bathroom has an outside window, and the light that you are going to put in the room.

B or C are my favorites. I think that the B design with the tiles in C (if they are available in larger size) would look really cool, and lead to a nice mix of the styles. Hey, and nice work on fixing the windows... it not only looks better, but I think it gives you some insurance of a better resale value in the future, as well.
