Trumpet Time

September 7th, 2011 at 04:55 am

Now that DD is in 5th grade she can play a musical instrument if she wants. And she does of course. Smile
The trumpet. *giggle*

This should be interesting.

She had to sign an agreement that she would stick with this for the entire school year. Now I need to find her a trumpet. We could buy a used one or rent one. Renting looks to be about $19-$28/month. Buying as low as $150.

I'm leaning toward buying. I could re-sell it at the end of the school year if she decides not to keep playing. Renting: 9 months X $20 = $180

Any suggestions?

When I was a kid, the rule always seemed to be to rent. But, those were the days before ebay and craigslist. If it's easy to re-sell, then you do probably come out ahead!

My only other thought is does renting cover repairs and stuff like that? May be another plus for renting?

I'd check out the pawn shops on the edges of the better parts of town. There are beautiful instruments there in some shops, strings, brass, woodwinds, drumkits. Most had been lovingly maintained.

Also are there any family members who play those instruments out there or old friends. Everyone knows someone who had an old clarinet or flute in the attic. I loaned my violin first to one niece and then to a second niece. The first stuck with it until high school and the second is on her second year. My son will be playing my viola.

When my sister was in high school she rented out her clarinet to a middle schooler for $10 a month. It was a good deal for both sides since it was far below the rental fee from the shops. Check the family and friends grapevine and see what's out there. You may find someone with a dusty trumpet who'd love to see it used again, costing you nothing, to very little.

It seems the difference in price over 9 months could be as little as $30;however, I'd hold off on buying until she plays for at least 2 months. I'm sure there are many who like the idea of playing an instrument, but when she gets into it she may lose interest.

My advice would be to rent for at least 2 months and see if her interest subsides or grows over that time. Then make a more final decision about buying, or not.

I can't tell you how many new hobbies I've purchased for, only to find I never really got into it. Like roller blades. Used a handful of times and then couldn't sell them.
