May*Not be Good to Us

May 8th, 2013 at 05:25 am

It doesn't look like May is going to be very good to us. Darn it!
Just too many little and big things needing attention this month.

Tried Pilates for the first time last Saturday morning. OMGosh I was so sore all over for two days after. Really a *total body* workout. My friend and I each bought a five class pack from Groupon a few months back. (My second ever Groupon purchase.) It is nice to be able to go to a class like that with a friend. I don't think I'll be taking more classes afterward because of the cost, but it's been fun to try it out.

The chicks are getting bigger.
The garden is well sprouted now.
DS had his third birthday last weekend and DD made him a super cute YogiBear cake.
My family is visiting this weekend.
I also have the two cats to care for over the weekend. (Yay! Some cash!)

Do you care for cats at your house, ever? I need to figure out my cat boarding options. I don't think the gas would be the most economical, but would be nice to know if we were ever in a pinch. (Now that we have a social cat who loves the car).

Also, I was meaning to ask you after one of your last posts. The shelter gave him Activyl(?) and I would say it has beaten the fleas he had. (He was clearly bothered by fleas and they were visible the first few days, but they seem to be gone. My dh said he is still seeing fleas on his light fur, though he is clearly picking them all off as I haven't seen any fleas or flea dirt at all). Anyway, should I just go cave and get some Advantage now or will this stuff really work?

    Thanks!! Big Grin

Please be very careful with these tick and flea medications. I applied Frontline to Waldo's shoulder area as directed and unfortunately he started trying to lick the spot. Every time I tried to stop him, he'd run away. He finally got to lick the spot and the medication made him froth at the mouth. It was very, very frightening and the cat (and I) totally freaked out.

I will never use that stuff again.

MM - I have not taken cats in to my house - yet.. Something I would like to have the space to do in the future. Naturally, if you were in a pinch I would watch your new boy! Smile But I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find something closer to you.

We have zero experience with Activyl here. It is pretty new in the US (launched last year I think?) and I don't know anyone who has tried it. I was actually curious to see how it was going to work for you.
The fleas that your DH are seeing - are they still moving around fast? Or more sluggish or "twitchy"? If it's the slow or twitchy than they are in the death stage, so it might be working fine.
My top pick for cats is Revolution. It is by Rx so he would need to be seen by your regular vet, however many places give a free exam to newly adopted pets (we do) so ask about that. If you want to go with the Advantage I think that is fine too. Also, I would wait a week before using another product.

PSaver - The topicals are very bitter. In part because of the carrying agent, many times alcohol based. Anything bitter will make a pet drool and froth like the dickens. Frown The best place to apply topicals on a cat is just behind the back of the neck and not as far down as the shoulders.
However, on my cat I ended up applying everything to her back, right above her tail. She is very obvious about her dislike of the smell when it's near her head and she has no interest in licking at it at all, so her tail area is better for her.

Okay - I will give it some time and see how it goes (fleas).

You are right - I can probably find something. I think ideally we need to find someone who will take pet into their home. I just don't like people in my house. Institutional boarding seems crazy expensive (my baseline is $0, so maybe anything will strike me as expensive), but there is probably some middle ground.

Are your Pilates classes for 30 minutes or for an hour? The reason I ask is because I was pretty used to 30 minutes of Pilates, but when I took a class at the gym in LL, CA last summer and it was an hour ... ooo boy!

I just sent you an e-mail about a focus group in your area. Big Grin It may be your lucky day!
