Bad News & Good News

Not trying to gross you all out....
Bad News - DD found a lice in her hair last week. **CRAP** You SA parents know what I mean. Just a wonderful part of childhood and parenting, Right? Rolleyes
So it has been a flurry of washing and vacuuming and spraying and combing..Arg. Luckily I haven't found any on me or DH or DS. And DD only had a few. Good thing it seems we caught on to the little buggers early. Everyone I know has gone thru this in their life at least once. I remember having them when I was about 10. Horrible because I've had long hair my whole life. Past my waist when I was that age. She's never had them before; we've been able to dodge the bullet all the other times it made the rounds at school.
The thing is it is expensive to treat. I was unpleasantly surprised when I spent $57 at CVS on shampoo, creme rinse and a metal toothed comb. Then there is all the time and water/energy to wash and dry everything. I was saying to my mom,
"How could low income families afford to do this?" My mom countered with,
"Think how hard/more expensive it would be if you didn't own a nice washer and dryer and you'd have to take everything to the Laundromat?"
WOW, I hadn't even thought about that. I realized I totally take my situation for granted. We are very lucky. Even though we're not "rolling in dough" all of our needs are more then met.
So after a short battle this weekend so far DD's head is all clear. Big Grin

Good News - (Actually VERY good Smile )
Received a check from our previous mortgage holder for $2475! It seems our mortgage broker got the payoff amount just before our October payment posted. So the money is our refunded October payment and the balance from our escrow account.
I am not sure where all this unexpected money will be going. I will put it all in the EF for now. I will absolutely be keeping at least 1k there for the EF goal. I will now check that off in the sidebar.

Little DS is now five and a half months. Here is a recent picture.

Amazing...I'm actually dealing with lice in our house today with my girls. One definitely had it worse than the others. Yuck!!

    What a cutie!!

Odd, I don't know a single person who has ever dealt with lice. I remember getting lice checks in school, but that's it.

I sympathize (shudder)...I got lice twice in HIGH SCHOOL and once while home from college due to my mom babysitting lots of elementary-school kids. It was a nightmare (making my head itch psychosomatically just to think about it). But I hear the newer treatment products are much more effective than they were back then, so you should be fine.

And with such a cutie to cheer you up!

eugh. my little brother and sister used to share their hats at primary school and get them all the time (like, twice a year or so) and at the time, I was in high school and thought it was incredibly annoying and embarrasing that I would have to shampoo my hair as well. Smile
odd that it cost you so much, over here the combs come free with the shampoo, and the shampoo itself costs no more than $20, even the natural ones. (i recommend neem based products, or a brand called kp24 which is really hardcore if you're getting frustrated... if you get the same products over there).

We have never had to deal with lice, thank goodness. As for the baby, he is adorable.

Ick! My dh and I grew up in the same area. (Well he did go to private school, so la de da). One day the subject of lice came up and he looked at me like I was crazy. HE had just never heard of a lice outbreak. I remember them often in school, but luckily never had to deal with it. I Can't help but wonder if my sons even have enough hair to attract lice (I don't know). Actually, my son's hair may be short, but it's like a nest. Scratch that thought. My younger son probably doesn't have enough hair.

Seems like it's going around though.

    Very cute picture!

    What a cutie!

I went through lice with my daughters, once with the older and a few timnes with my youngest, who had very thick hair all the way past her waist. Part of the problem with the youngest was sports, baseball helmets, etc. Sorry you are going through it. I still have one of those little combs I use on my dog for fleas!

I don't remember it, but my mom has told me that I had lice when I was in Kindergarten. Hope it goes away fast!

    Thanks for all your support!
To all of you who have never had lice - you are so LUCKY! Smile Whitestripe - We do have different products here, or at least they have different names.
Monkey Mama - I wonder if at a private school families might be hush, hush about them having lice just because of the embarassment?? And I do think boys have an advantage with not long enough hair.

On the cost issue - I don't have the reciept here, but I think I remember I spent $15 on the shampoo, $14 on the creme rinse, $11 on the metal toothed comb with two length attachments and $8 on the mattress spray. The shampoo does come with plastic combs, but they are useless.
Homebody - I did use a flea comb also. They work great.
ScottishGirl - that product is not available in the USA.
My mom is bringing some "Planet Solution", (although I think it has a new name now) this weekend and it will kill lice too. So far **knock on wood** DD's head looks pretty clear.
