Before:
After:
We spent about $70 in prep supplies like cement board, drywall, mortar, special screws etc.
We paid OOP $188 for the tile and supplies (grout, spacers, etc). The rest was paid with a gift card and money from MIL. (The tile was my Christmas gift and I couldn't be happier about that! )
Free labor from DH and FIL!
DH needs to finish trimming out the window with a new sill. I need to buy a shower curtain and rod.
At some point we will replace the fixtures - the shiny cheap chrome stuff does not match AT ALL!
Bathroom reno cost thus far: $360

Did you and your helpers already know how to do this job? If not, could you explain how you learned?

My dad is very cheap and re-tiled his whole house, and it wasn't done very well. SO basically, I would like to hire a pro to do ours - I hate the ugly white dirty tile we have in our master bath. If I could do it all over again, I would have upgraded the tile. As is, when we bought our house we splurged on a few things, but were cognizant not to splurge on everything. IF I could do over, would have left the kids' bath that way but would have upgraded the master bath. Was probably dirt cheap compared to ripping out and starting over, which is what I have wanted to do for most of the last 10 years. (Which is why we updated so much in the first place - it was dirt cheap to just do it nice the first time - paid builder basically just the cost of materials).
Anyway, so I LOVE it and am jealous. Enjoy!!

Joan - FIL has now done several tile projects. He learned from a friend who helped him tile his first project. This is DH's second tile project. The first was a bathroom floor at my mom's house. FIL has helped him with both. I took a DIY class at Home Depot (free) because I was anticipating having to help or do it with DH. The class was very informative and gave me a chance to try tiling hands-on. It seems to me that doing tile is not really very hard. It does take time and a bit messy. I really think most anyone could do it. FIL brought his tile saw, which is nice to have, you could rent one or a simple tile cutter will work for simple straight cuts.
