Warm Days. Bounced Payroll Check.

March 14th, 2013 at 01:41 am

It was 78F here today. Tomorrow is supposed to be 80F. Wow!

Both DH and I were off work early today. He has been busy, busy working outside. He is widening our driveway by about 18" using free cement he got from a job. He's been moving dirt and using it to fill dips and uneven spots in the lawn.

I think we might start our garden early this year. Maybe as soon as next weekend even.

We also are planning to pick out some baby chicks soon. New laying hens to "freshen" our flock. Smile

------
Now the not so sunny part:

My co-worker's payroll check bounced. Our boss told her this morning that it had been returned. He told her he will pay all the fees associated of course, but the hassle? Blah! She was so upset. Frown

He can't give her the money until tomorrow...

Just to further prove our boss totally sucks with his money.

It would be different if they were scraping by at home. That isn't the case. There are cell phones, premium cable, gym memberships, ice skating lessons, ski weekends and on and on...
The business gets treated like an ATM.

I have had many conversations with him saying how when times get tight you have to cut out the non-essentials.

Why would that be so hard?

A big reason (or maybe the whole reason) is both he and his DW don't want to "deprive" their children of anything (the "kids" are 24, 22, 20 now). Add to that a healthy dose of "we-make-plenty-of-money" keeping up with the Joneses mindset.

Very frustrating.
Plus worrisome when it gets so bad it affects payroll.

ack...thats not good. Hopefully this is not a common thing! Makes for a budgeting nightmare for the staff...The weather was gorgeous here today too!

For my co-worker it's the third time in 11 years.
I've had it happen once or twice in 13 years.
Thankfully not "often". But once is enough!

Sorry to hear that is going on. Of course, just because someone is spending their money in that manner does not mean they have the cash on hand. All those expenses could be on credit. Either way he has a cash flow problem!

Wow...that is kinda scary...not good....not good at all. I was curious as to why her's bounced and yours didn't? Are you paid at different times of the month?

It was beautiful here today too! Smile

Wow, that would FREAK my s&*$ out. Never had that happen with a paycheck (or any check come to think of it).

SO jealous of your weather! We've been getting some 30s and 40s which felt pretty nice by comparison, but now we'll be dipping back down into the 20s for a week. :/

This happened to me once when I was young. My boss had to give up his business and his mother bailed him out and gave us our last checks. Even worse he was taking taxes out of our checks supposedly and the IRS had no record of it.

I hope your boss will see the light and get things worked out in his finances!

Is there any way for staff to verify deductions are being forwarded to IRS, SS, any other deductions? I've never had that type of experience and thought most payroll was now direct deposit. I wouldn't feel very secure at that employment.

So many of us now have automatic payments timed with payroll. I hope your co worked had a linked saving account to keep her from having her credit rating negatively affected with resultant NSF

In my experience, bounced checks are followed by business failure. Hope this will not be the case, but please be ready!

My DH had that happen once. It was followed the next month by the IRS coming into the office and closing it down because the boss hadn't been paying payroll taxes. Keep your eyes open and save all your pay stubs to protect yourself.

I don't know if you remember or not, but when I worked at the gym, I had at least 3 paychecks bounce. After the third one I would ask my manager *before* going to cash the check --- is there money for this? More often than not, I'd be told to wait - sometimes up to a week. That's part of why once I had enough tutoring students to make up for the gym income ... I was gone!
